In a time when universities emphasize large-scale and online education, UCR is strongly committed to small-scale ‘teaching by osmosis.’
We never have more than 25 students in a class. Every course consists of 30 sessions, in which you’ll have to debate, present, engage in group work and hand in a variety of assignments. Our instructors have consistently been ranked amongst the best university teachers in the Netherlands by the Elsevier and Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs surveys. At UCR, the professors teach the first-year courses, and 90 % of our instructors hold a PhD. Most of them are dedicated staff who, like the students, live in Middelburg and are easily available for meetings. Students appreciate the swift and extensive feedback that they get from instructors and personal tutors. Alumni typically remember fondly how easy it was to just pop by an instructor’s office.
‘One thing I’ll never forget is how easy it was to have a good conversation about just about everything with everyone.’
UCR’s instructors cherish excellence in teaching and learning and continuously strive to improve their courses and educational skills. We also conduct research on what truly constitutes excellent learning. Via our partnership with Harvard University’s Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, we are involved in providing training on teaching excellence to other educators in higher education. In 2012, for instance, the Minister of Education opened the Week of Excellence in Teaching at UCR during the Harvard seminar.
