Diversity Scholarships
Starting with the 2024 – 2025 academic year, UCR is offering several scholarships for students who need additional financial support to study a UCR. 13 of these scholarships are so-called diversity scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to students from regions less represented at UCR. 3 of these are earmarked for students from Zeeland. The remaining scholarships are earmarked for students from Latin America (3x), Africa (3x), Dutch Caribbean or Suriname (3x) and Ukraine (1x)
Diversity at UCR
UCR consists of a very diverse community of students and staff. About 65% of the students are of non-Dutch nationality, and within the student population of 600 students, over 60 different nationalities are represented. Despite the fact that UCR has been based in Zeeland for 20 years, relatively few (6 to 8) students from Zeeland begin their studies at UCR each year . By offering scholarships, the university hopes to remove possible barriers.
Topics important to Zeeland
At UCR, much attention is paid to solutions to local issues in water, energy, and food. Both in the educational program and in regional collaborations such as the Joint Research Center Zeeland and the Delta Climate Center. Zeeland is seen as a living lab to work on solutions that can be applied worldwide. Prof. Edward Nieuwenhuis, Dean of UCR: ‘UCR believes it is important to attract students close to home. Especially students from Zeeland should think along about sea level rise or protein transition so that after graduation they can make a unique contribution to tackling and solving these major challenges’.
Financial support
The diversity scholarships are so-called need-based scholarships. Students are eligible for these when their parents’ combined income is less than €40,000 net per year. To further qualify for a scholarship, students must be admitted to UCR, and be pursuing their studies there.
