Wednesday February 19th, the students of the 100 level course Introduction to Archaeology course weathered  blistering winds and barricaded roads to the beach to see the now submerged location of Villa Walichrum, the most important early Medieval town in Zeeland and environs. Afterwards we visited the exhibition about this settlement at Terra Maris Museum in Domburg, and the depots of the Foundation for Zeeuwse Heritage (SCEZ) to handle some of the materials from this excavation site ourselves. The collection was mostly uncovered when in the 17th and 18th centuries, low tide brought some of the town’s cemeteries to the surface.
