Karen van den Berg, Student Counselor & Confidential Advisor
Karen started working at UCR in 2007 and is originally from Ontario, Canada. A social worker by profession, she is part of the Well-being Team and is available for students in need of personal advice on all kinds of matters. Karen believes that people benefit from talking about what is on their mind, better understanding their personal strengths, and knowing what is available in the form of support. She also enjoys organizing the “Out of the Bubble and Into Nature” trips, in which students and employees can escape the stresses of daily life, mingle and have a nice walk in the beautiful nature of Zeeland.

Chelsea Azumah, International Officer
Chelsea is from Ghana in Africa but has lived in Qatar for six years before coming to the Netherlands in 2016 to study at UCR. She graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Law and International Relations and started working at UCR in 2021. Chelsea is here to guide students and to help them find exchange and internship opportunities around the world. She was also a coach for the law students who worked on the Philip Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition as part of their senior project. As a former student here, she is well-versed in the academic and everyday matters of UCR student life.

dr. Ernestine Lahey, Associate Professor of Linguistics and Rhetoric
Dr. Lahey’s research interests are broad, and include stylistics, text world theory, literary landscape representation, and Canadian literature and culture. Ernestine says that she loves teaching at UCR because of the energy of our undergraduates, for whom so much is still new and exciting: “The enthusiasm they bring to their learning is contagious and inspiring.”

dr. Soledad Santos, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Student Counselor
Soledad is originally from Argentina. Her research on perinatal mental health and early childhood led her to receive several awards. Throughout her career, she has acquired diverse experience as an instructor, researcher and clinical psychologist in hospitals before coming to work at UCR. “It is a privilege to teach at an international and motivated environment like UCR, where the process of teaching and learning is enabled through a constructive, personalized and active interaction between students, instructors and concepts” she says.
