 Karen van den Berg, BSW

Why I like my work at UCR: While most students meet with me because they are trying to sort out academic and/ore personal challenges, each story told is unique. I feel honoured that they share their stories with me and I enjoy supporting them in their journey to better understand their strengths and their resources.

What is interesting about my work: Watching the students on graduation day, receive their well- deserved degree, knowing that each one in their own way would have faced life’s up and downs and leave UCR with more insight into their interests, capabilities, as well as limitations; this remains a rewarding experience.

Karen van den Berg is a student counsellor at University College Roosevelt. She has a Bachelor of Social Work Degree from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada (1991) and an Undergraduate Degree from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada (1986). Prior to moving to the Netherlands in June 2006, Karen worked as a social worker for 15 years in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, specializing in addictions. While in the Netherlands for one year in 1996, she worked for the Jellinek's Consultancy Bureau writing addiction information materials.
