 Dr. Hans Bloemsma (Head of Department)

Profile

Hans Bloemsma is an art historian. He studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, the University of Siena, and the University of Groningen, where he graduated in 1993. After working in Italy for several years, he joined the Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem. In 1998 he returned to Groningen University, first as junior researcher, and later as lecturer. Since 2005 he has been teaching art history at University College Roosevelt. He is currently Head of the Arts & Humanities department.
 
His research interests focus on Italian art from the late Middle Ages. He has a special interest in narrative painting from that period, which is also the subject of his dissertation (2006).
 
He is currently working on an annotated edition of letters by Italian artists in the Frits Lugt Collection (Fondation Custodia) in Paris in cooperation with Henk van Veen (Groningen University) and Edward Grasman (Leiden University).
