Joint statement of political parties

Representatives of the political parties in Middelburg will have a moment of silence on Friday March 4 at 12:50 on the Market Square. This is during the weekly ringing of the bells, which commemorate the bombardments in the second world war. More information about this can be found here (Dutch). The history of our city and the situation in Ukraine are linked to each other in this way. The political parties in Middelburg symbolize the connectedness of our city with the situation.

After the joint memorial, parties will have the opportunity to paint a statement in blue and yellow. The Cultuurhuis will supply materials (canvasses, paint, brushes) and easels. The parties will use this to leave a lasting message for Middelburg.

Town hall yellow and blue

The former town hall on the market square will be lit up in yellow and blue, the colors of the Ukrainian flag, on Friday night March 4. The municipality has organized this to show their solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Both for the Ukrainians who live in our municipality as for the people there. Our thoughts are with them all. Every person has the right to live in freedom. With the lighting on our town hall, we want to offer our support to those people whose freedom in life has been taken from them.

Help for refugees

The people of Middelburg also want to offer help to refugees from Ukraine. For example, by giving goods or housing refugees. The municipality appreciates this. However, the municipality is not able to offer financial support for individual initiatives, but is in contact with different social organizations who can help our inhabitants. More information about what you can do for the people in Ukraine is on www.nederlandvoorvluchtelingen.nl (Dutch).
