After having difficulty pinpointing my specific academic interest, I decided to start my studies here at UCR. I have always taken a liking to fields that analyze the human mind, the way we think, and the way we act like we do. For this reason I am very glad that UCR has allowed me to combine all these different interests and convert them into one cohesive package. By following a wide variety of courses, ranging from cognitive neuroscience to philosophy, and from linguistics to psychology, I believe I have found my future ambitions: after I graduate at UCR I would love to follow the Artificial Intelligence Master program at Utrecht University.

Of course, UCR is more than just academics. The community that makes up UCR is built up of a vast and diverse collection of amazing individuals from all over the world. As a Dutch resident who has always lived in The Netherlands, partaking in such an international community has enlightened me in more ways than I could imagine. In my opinion however, the thing that makes UCR really stand out, is the fact that almost everything unrelated to academics is organized by students, for students. Different student-run committees allow you to participate in almost any event you could think of: parties, sports, theater, music, performances, and much more!

Myself, I have been a volunteer at our Common House Elliott – a place where you can come to study, party or just for a cup of coffee. I’ve also represented the society PUMA as chair and secretary in an attempt to connect the UCR students more with the residents of Middelburg. Finally, in my next and final year, I am taking the position as secretary of the Housing Affairs Council, a board that strives to ensure the highest student satisfaction regarding housing. This shows that you don’t even have to try too hard to be a member of this community – there is always a place for you in whatever you are interested in.

UCR has been the perfect place to develop, broaden and specialize myself as a student who was able to transform my many – and seemingly unrelated – interests into a package that excites me more every day. Together with the high student involvement and countless possibilities to enjoy your time on campus, it truly is a welcoming and comforting place to be.
