Though I am really enjoying my courses in Life Science and Biomedical Science as part of the Pre-Med Program, what I love about UCR is that I can take completely different courses like Linguistics and Spanish. This allows me to broaden my horizons, mostly for fun, but I also encounter topics in my non-Science courses that I can apply in my medical education.

I spend a lot of my time studying in my room or in Elliott, but I also enjoy hanging out with friends and the girls from my sorority. My sorority meets every week for a typical Dutch ‘borrel’ with drinks and lots of fun. Other than that, I teach dance to fellow students, and I am involved with housing issues as part of the Housing Affairs Council.

Coming from a small village in the Netherlands is part of why I fell in love with Middelburg. It’s a cozy place, which is not too big or intimidating but still as busy and vibrant as a large city, where you can wander around and notice new things every day. My favorite spot is Market Square in the winter. There’s an ice rink in the middle, just in front of the former City Hall, which is completely lit up by warm lights. The restaurants try their best to make the square as Christmassy as it can get by having wooden huts cover the terraces, placing Christmas trees everywhere, and hanging fairy lights in every corner. Though this already sounds magical, you can really only experience it by coming to see the city yourself!
