 Shelter City Middelburg

UCR is very honored and proud to host Human Rights defender James Ninrew Dong from South Sudan as part of the Shelter Cities Project. Mr. Dong fights for the human rights of his clan, the Nuer in South Sudan. In the past year, the situation for the Nuer has worsened and mr. Dong has survived multiple attacks on his life.

After The Hague, Middelburg is the second city to become a Shelter City in the Netherlands. The Shelter Cities project aims to give human rights defenders who are in immediate danger a place to stay and work for three months. During his three months in Middelburg and at UCR, mr. Dong will have the opportunity to continue his work in an environment of calm and peace. He will be following and giving classes at UCR, and he will have an office in the UCR buildings. He hopes that his presence in the Netherlands will increase the international attention for the situation in South Sudan.
