 Seminar

Seminar human rights and cultural diversity

What can a close look at today’s cultural diversity contribute to understandings of human rights? This was the theme of an international seminar held on the 28th of November at UCR. Contributions focused on cases ranging from customary woman-to-woman marriages, the place of children in Kenya’s customary courts, the rights of nature, the influence of colonialism on human rights for minorities and race and human rights education in Curacao. UCR faculty Bert van den Brink, Barbara Oomen, John Friedman, Carolina Sanchez and Rolando Vazquez contributed to the discussion with perspectives from philosophy, law, anthropology and sociology. The presence of UCR students with many different backgrounds made for lively discussions on a topic that can, clearly, not truly be understood from one single perspective, discipline or corner of the world.
