University College Roosevelt students have access to excellent recreational facilities in Middelburg. The province of Zeeland, with its many beaches just a short 20- to 30-minute bike ride from Middelburg, offers UCR students a great number of outdoor recreational options. In addition, the cities of Middelburg, Vlissingen and Goes all offer diverse cultural programs. Students can acquire a SportsPass through the student association RASA, which allows them to participate in a variety of sports activities.
Middelburg is known for its cultural offerings, including theater and music festivals. The annual Zeeland Nazomer Festival offers theatrical performances and great live music in the ‘festival heart’ on the Abdijplein, right in the center of Middelburg. The many pubs, cafés, restaurants, clubs, and a variety of other locations where students and locals meet and mingle, are all within walking distance of the UCR campus.
Students can visit the Zeeuws Museum and the Vleeshal, both with varying art exhibits. For plays and concerts, students go to the Stadsschouwburg. Every Thursday, students can mingle with residents from the region at the local market where they can buy inexpensive groceries and other products. The local bookstore, De Drvkkery, also serves as the UCR bookstore, selling academic books in addition to a wide range of other great reads, many of which are also available in English. The local venues are frequented both by UCR students and staff. Sooner or later everybody finds his or own favorite places in town. Various local businesses offer student discounts, so students are advised to always bring their student IDs.
Some Middelburg favorites include:
De Mug has great food and an impressive list of quality beers; La Piccola Italia has great and affordable pizza; going for a coffee at KoD’oooooooor is practically obligatory for UCR students; BTje Anders sells homemade fries and other snacks; and for art house films, there is Cinema Middelburg. For late night parties, Seventy-seven is the place to be, frequently hosting a student night in their pub.
