 Dr. David Criekemans

Profile
 Dr. David Criekemans is a Belgian national, born in Antwerp (1974). Since August 2012, he is a part-time Assistant Professor in International Relations at University College Roosevelt. He teaches Theories of International Relations (SSC 255) and Security in the Post-Cold War Era (SSC 354).
Dr. Criekemans is also an Assistant Professor in International Politics at the University of Antwerp (Belgium), and a Lecturer in Geopolitics at the Geneva Institute of Geopolitical Studies (GIGS) (Switzerland). He is often asked as guest lecturer at universities in Belgium and abroad. Formerly, he also taught Geopolitics at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels (2007-2011), Regional Integration at the Catholic University of Brussels (2006-2007), and a module on Geopolitics and the Geopolitics of Energy at Jacobs University Bremen in Germany (December 2011-January 2012).

Research

In 2005, he completed and defended his Ph.D. at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) on the intellectual history of Geopolitics (1890-2005), and its relation to Theory of International Relations. The manuscript (written in Dutch) was published by the Scientific Publisher Garant (Antwerp , Belgium / Apeldoorn , the Netherlands ) under the title “Geopolitics, ‘geographical consciousness’ of foreign policy?” (original title in Dutch: “Geopolitiek, ‘geografisch geweten’ van de buitenlandse politiek?”), ISBN 90-441-1969-9.

David Criekemans conducts research on themes such as:

  • foreign policy (regional, national, European Union)
  • Geopolitics (both theoretical and case-oriented)
  • energy and international politics
  •  multilateral policy and negotiations
  • theory and history of International Relations

Scientific service

Regarding scientific service, Dr. Criekemans has done substantial advisory and consultancy work for the Flemish regional authorities in Belgium on diverse aspects of foreign policy and international relations; for the Flemish Department of Foreign Affairs, for ministerial cabinets in the Flemish government and for members of the Flemish parliament. Additionally, he worked with other regional governments (Catalonia, Québec).

Dr. Criekemans is often interviewed by the national and international press on current topics of geopolitics, international relations, diplomacy, foreign policy and energy. As a national opinion-maker in Belgium, he is "Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs" in the "Shadow Cabinet" appointed by the Belgian financial-economic daily newspaper 'De Tijd' (since March 2012).

Publications

David Criekemans was Guest Editor of a Special Issue on ‘Regional Sub-state Diplomacy Today’, which appeared in The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, published in March 2010 (Volume 5, number 1). This was also published as an edited book under the same title with Martinus Nijhoff Publishers ( ISBN 978-90-04-18357-5 ).
