 Dr. Jaap Hanekamp

Profile

Born in Terneuzen (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) in 1964, the author received his first Ph.D. in 1992 at the chemistry and medicine faculties of the Utrecht University together with his father, who received his Ph.D. in theology on the same day. After working roughly a year at AKZO-Nobel in Deventer, in 1994 he left with his wife and unborn son to the United States to join the University of California Riverside as a post-doc.

Back in the Netherlands in 1995, chemistry was traded in for a job in which science, policymaking, and societal issues were at the centre of his interest. Food chemistry, food safety and security, toxicological modelling, environmental health, and other risk assessment and management topics are frequently on his plate. Twice he functioned as an expert witness in court cases (one of which was a criminal court case) dealing with low-level presence of antibiotics in foods and the purported risks involved, both of which were settled in favour of the presented science.

He published numerous scientific articles on these and other issues, but also intermittently adds to the public debate by op-eds in different (inter)national newspapers such as the Financieele Dagblad, Nederlands Dagblad, Wall Street Journal, and regional and specialised newsprints such as Agrarisch Dagblad, De Boerderij, and V-focus. In 2015, he re-entered the debate on ammonia emissions from animal rearing in the Netherlands. Moreover, between 1996 and 2000 he and his wife Winie foster-parented in total nine teenagers (4 at the time, though). With Winie, he has three children.

Apart from his work at the University College Roosevelt in Middelburg, where he teaches chemistry, history and philosophy of science, and the sustainability capstone since 2016, he has his own (small) researchcompany HAN-Research in which independent scientific research for third party contractors is carried out. Since 2011 he became an adjunct faculty member of the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, department of Public Health, Environmental Health Sciences. As of 2012, he is member of the editorial board of the Journal Dose-Response.

Precautionary culture proved to be a recurrent theme in some of his recent scientific work. That resulted, under the supervision of prof. dr. Erik Borgman, in a new Ph.D.-thesis titled Utopia and Gospel: Unearthing the Good News in Precautionary Culture, which he defended on the 11th of February 2015 at the Tilburg University.
