 Prof. dr. Sofie Loyens

​Profile

Sofie Loyens is director of the Roosevelt Center for Excellence in Education (RCEE) and full Professor of Excellence in Education in the departments of Social Sciences and Academic Core at University College Roosevelt (UCR), Utrecht University (UU). Her chair of Excellence in Education is the first (and only) of its kind in the Netherlands. She is also appointed as an Associate Professor in Educational Psychology at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).

Prof. Dr. Loyens received her master’s degree in Cognitive Psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology  from Maastricht University (UM) and her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). Since receiving her Ph.D., she has published numerous articles and book chapters in the area of problem-based/student-centered learning, motivation, video-based modeling examples, and physical activity in education. She has also presented papers and held invited addresses at several (inter)national conferences. She has been a guest editor of special issues in Instructional Science and the Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning.

At UCR, Prof. Dr. Loyens develops the Teaching Track, in which excellent students are prepared for a second degree teachers license. The Teaching Track aims to get more academically educated teachers in front of the classroom. 

Currently, she is an editorial board member of Contemporary Educational Psychology, Educational Research Review, and the Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning. Her research focuses on problem-based learning (or more broadly student-centered/constructivist learning environments), conceptual change, motivation from a Self-Determination Theory perspective, and self-regulated/self-directed learning. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Maryland in the US, Sherbrooke University in Canada, and Tongji University in Shanghai (China).
