 Christine Crommelin, M.A.

Why I work at UCR: Since joining UCR I have greatly enjoyed working with students from many different cultures and backgrounds. Year in year out I meet highly motivated students who are eager to learn, and this inspires me as an instructor.

What is interesting about my discipline: One of the most inspiring parts of my position, aside from teaching students Dutch, is to build a link between the students and the local community through internships, excursions, and projects. In this way they become acquainted with Dutch customs and culture in everyday life, and they feel more connected to the place where they study.

Profile

Christine Crommelin is an instructor of Dutch. She studied in Amsterdam at De Witte Leli College and received her diploma in History and Dutch in 1988. In 1993 she achieved a Masters in International Relations from Sussex University in England. Between 1989 – 90 she worked as a Dutch language instructor with asylum-seekers in Haarlem. From 1993 to 2001 she worked full-time as a Dutch language instructor with the Regionaal Opleidingen Centrum (ROC) in Amsterdam, where she also served as a team coordinator for three years. Before joining University College Roosevelt, she worked part-time with ROC Middelburg (NT2).
In 2005 she joined UCR and was given the responsibility to develop the Dutch track. Outside of the classroom she has worked closely with international students at UCR to prepare them for the SUMMA (Utrecht) and AKO (Maastricht) Dutch medical entrance exams.

Study Skills Center

In 2012 Christine was one of the co-organizers of the UCR Study Skills Center. This was set up to support students to achieve their full potential with their studies. Through one-on-one meetings and group workshops, Christine offers advice and coaching on time management and self-management skills, covering issues such as procrastination, perfectionism, and how best to deal with the study load. From Fall 2014 the center will also offer lunchtime sessions which will include relaxation (meditation).
